Why selfie video?

Video is the best medium to capture human experience and selfie video is the best way to get honest feedback. Let me explain.

Video is an amazing invention and selfie cameras take that to the next level. It's more than just a mirror to pucker your lips for, it's a method for producing input while consuming output. It creates natural collaboration in simple yet meaningful situations: speak words of gratitude to a special someone and watch their face light up. That's magic.

How much do you trust a response you get through email versus from the “horse’s mouth”? 🐴

Try writing a description of a landscape while you're experiencing it. You'll have to hold something, maybe a phone or sit down with a laptop or even an actual pencil and paper. Yes, you could probably do it but there's something more subtle happening: your mind and thoughts are forced through a strict structure at the cost of spontaneous intuition. What's more important: being genuine or grammar?

And let's talk about surprises because I'm enamored with the concept of unveiling a mystery. What's behind door number one? Reality shows routinely interview their stars afterwards to have them talk through their thoughts as circumstances had unfolded, but we could already see some of that on their faces at the moment. The crucial point here is that their initial reaction can only ever happen once and if it isn't recorded, it can never be properly described.

Have you ever sat down to journal about a life changing event and couldn’t find the words?

Finally, there is a lot more data in digital video than there is in text or even an image. You've heard that a picture is worth a thousand words - so how about a video? A million words? Infinite? Sure you can see objects in motion but there is also sound and time. The wealth of information in a video cannot be overstated and you could probably study the same frames for years and continue to uncover new and interesting things.

How many times have you watched your favorite movie?

These reasons are why I believe strongly in focusing on video as the primary medium for the next wave of technology. This is why we're building Surfey. The challenge up until the last year has been how to effectively extract that so-called "unstructured" goldmine of data and put it into a structured format. This is what we'll be using the latest multi-modal generative AI for and the subject of another post.

Have a great weekend and you Seattle folks enjoy the sunshine that we've long waited for,

Heck no! Surfey gives your customers a way to comfortably send you feedback "face-to-face" without direct interaction. And rather than simply leaving a chocolate bar on the table of your Airbnb (I've experienced this!) you can reward their willingness to communicate with something they can actually use, like a gift card to their favorite store. Telling them the importance of a 5-star review for excellent service and letting them vent openly will lead to rave reviews and prevent rage reviews....

In a world of increasingly generated content, having genuine human input given in a natural way is essential. I've spent the last 3 months building Surfey from scratch with my friend Barto and I believe we are onto something great and necessary. But I do worry I've created a cart before having a horse and that this is a tool in search of a niche.
